A Brief History

In 1968 a small group of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngologists held their first meeting in Sirmione, Italy. The meeting was chaired by Gatti Manacini, Fior and Pestalozza , who later organized the first official International Congress of Pediatric ORL in 1977. At the end of this congress, in Sirmione, the European Working Group in Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology was founded.

ESPO BarSince then, congresses and conferences have been held in Warsaw (1979, Kossowska), Bath (1982, Pracy, Evans), Sèvres (1984, Narcy), Eger (1986, Hirschberg, Labas), Nijmegen (1987, Cremers), Paris (1988, Desnos), Gent (1990, van Cauwenberge), Sirmione (1992, Fior, Pestalozza), Jerusalem (1993, Sade)

As our reputation has grown, attendance has also increased: indeed, between 500 and 1200 delegates attended more recent events in Oxford, Graz, Athens and recently Paris.

In 1994 it was decided by the general assembly that the Working Group had grown into a full Society. It was time to change the name into the European Society of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, to make by-laws and acquire a legal status. The founding members were Renato Fior, Cor Cremers,Pekka Karma and Jetty & Carel Verwoerd
Rotterdam (1994, Verwoerd, Verwoerd-Verhoef), Siena (1996, Passali), Helsinki (1998, Karma), Graz (2000/2001, Stammberger), Oxford (2002, Graham, Raine), Athens (2004, Simasko, Nikolopoulos).Paris (2006, Garabedian,Froehlich,Triglia and Denoyelle)

Since becoming a Society, ESPO has organised an alternating two-yearly cycle of International Congresses and Conferences across Europe. Originally conferences focussed only on a few important topics, although nowadays they do not differ much from the International Congresses.Bylaws have been changed into two-yearly Congresses.

Each meeting pays attention to all those aspects of pediatric otorhinolaryngology that are quite different from adult pathology, and are so disturbing for children.
