Spring 2007 has started early in most of the European countries and with the nice summer weather the season of congresses and conferences has also begun.
Last week the ASPO organized its yearly meeting within COSM in San Diego, USA (www.aspo.us). Several ESPO members have attended this congress; ESPO president, Noel Garabédian and vice-president of the ESPO Congress 2008, Gabor Katona, represented our society. As usual this meeting was followed by the very instructive International Endoscopy Course (the 13th), also in San Diego.
In June (3-7) the 9th International Symposium on Recent advances in Otitis Media under the auspices of the House Institute is organized in St Petersburg, Florida, USA (www.hei.org/otitis2007).
Most important is the congress of the European Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngologic Societies (EUFOS) in cooperation with the recently founded European Academy of ORL-H&NS, in Vienna from 30 June - 4 July 2007 (www.eufos-vienna2007.org, www.eufos.org, www.eaorl-hns.org). This meeting is organized by Klaus Albegger and Heinz Stammberger, our two representatives for Austria in the ESPO Council.
The very dedicated scientific programme committee received more than 1500 abstracts which they screened for oral or poster presentation. Last February a group of colleagues forming the International Faculty selected with enthusiasm the abstracts on subject and divided all the sessions over the days. Most of the European subspeciality societies like ESPO will be represented by one or two Round Tables. The ESPO round table on ‘Recent advances in Pediatric ORL’ (moderator John Graham, chairman Javier Cervera) is scheduled for Tuesday 3 July, 08.15-10.00, in the main lecture hall of the Hofburg in Vienna.
After the societies EAACI, EAFPS, EAONO, EASM, EFAS, EDGD, EGFL, EHNS, ELS, ERS, ESBS, ESGS, EUFOS, UEMS AND UEP, ESPO has finally decided to join the recently founded (in 2005) European Academy of ORL-H&NS. The aim is ‘to coordinate the activities of the various organization mentioned above, and to provide rationalization of courses, congresses, instruction sessions and teaching programmes within Europe’; further to set up ‘a framework for instruction of trainee otorhinolaryngologists at affordable prices’ (from the Byelaws, draft version, of the EAORL-HNS).
In principle every odd-numbered year there will be a general ORL training programme of the European Academy with or without EUFOS (periodicity of EUFOS congresses being every 4 years), while in every even-numbered year congresses and training programmes of subspeciality societies in Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology (including ESPO) will be held.
The ESPO Board is hoping that through the EAORL-HNS more coordination and cooperation in the European ORL-world might be established.
Preparations for the 8th ESPO Conference in Budapest, June 2008 are proceeding satisfactorily. More than 25 Round Tables, 9 Instructional courses, 10 Guest lectures and many free paper (oral and poster) sessions are foreseen. You can find the preliminary information at the website of the congress and ESPO (www.espobudapest2008.com and www.espo.eu.com). The second announcement from the organizing committee (Gabor Katona, Zsolt Farkas and Istvan Sziklai) may be expected at the end of November 2007. The most important dates are the deadline for abstracts (15 February 2008), confirmation of abstract selection (15 April) and the deadline for early registration with reduced rate (15 March).
May we invite all ESPO members and their co-workers to contribute to this meeting in Beautiful Budapest.
Jetty and I are looking forward to seeing all in Budapest in June 2008 and for now, wish you a pleasant summer period.
