News : ESPO News letter Winter 2007

It is my pleasure to send you all an update about ESPO and its activities in this and the coming year.
At the most successful EUFOS congress, in Vienna last June, ESPO was represented with a well-attended Round Table “Challenges in Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology” and a free paper session on “Pediatrics”. Both sessions demonstrated lectures of high standard which were well received.

From now on we are focusing on the 8th International Conference of ESPO in Budapest, 8-11 June 2008. The local organising committee is very busy finalising the scientific programme. The second announcement is due in December, and also to be read on the ESPO website www.espo.eu.com.
Most important date is the deadline for abstracts: extended now to 29th February 2008

Aim of the congress is to include topics with high clinical relevance, important issues related to controversies in diagnostics and treatment and advancements in basic research concerning ORL diseases in children. As can be said from former ESPO congresses, it is expected “to produce a loud echo in the international scientific community of (pediatric) Otorhinolaryngology” (quote of the vice-president of the congress, Gabor Katona).
Twenty five Round Tables, 7 Guest lectures, 10 Instructional courses, 14 Oral papers sessions, 7 short Oral paper sessions and daily Poster sessions are scheduled.
More information and a registration format you may find at the website www.espobudapest2008.com.
Questions can be addressed to sipos.alice@motesz.hu of the congress bureau.

Many medical specialists within Europe have no appreciation of the various organizations established in the last decade, like UEMS, EUFOS and EAORL-HNS. All these institutions have their specific objectives in the medical field, and I will try to explain the intentions of the various organizations.
In the circles of the European Union (EU) there is an increasing interest to even up and level up the standard of medical doctors in the different countries of the EU. The UEMS (Union Européenne de Médecins Specialistes) was founded to bring more uniformity in the standards of teaching and training of medical doctors. For each specialism, also for Otorhinolaryngology, there is a separate section chaired by a group of specialists from different European countries, working in their field of health care.

EUFOS (European Federation of ORL Societies; www.eufos.com has organized 4-yearly congresses in one of the main cities of Europe. The last one, as mentioned above, was held in Vienna in June 2007, received more than 3000 participants and it was a great success.
However, to enhance the education of young colleagues who want to become an otorhinolaryngologist the European Academy of ORL-HNS was founded in 2006. The EAORL-HNS initiators have worked hard together with the EUFOS organization in 2006 and 2007 to make the Vienna meeting so successful.

The main objective of the EAORL-HNS (European Academy of OtoRhinoLaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery), in which the majority of the ORL subspeciality societies within Europe are participating, is to improve and intensify teaching and training in Otorhinolaryngology ( www.eaorl-hns.org).
The first congress will be organized in 2009 in Mannheim, Germany (president: Karl Hörmann). The programme will contain many instructional courses and is, in particular, meant for residents and young ORL specialists. The registration fee will be kept low in order to give many colleagues the opportunity to attend the congress. Also low-budget accommodation is available.
The Board of the Academy consists of president, secretary-general and treasurer.
Executive Committee consists of representatives from EUFOS, UEMS, ELS, EHNS, ERS; also ESPO in due time?

In the General Assembly there is representation of various European ORL Societies entitled to 25 votes:
EUFOS 3; ESPO 2; UEMS 2; EHNS 2; EAORL 2.
smaller societies
EAACI, EAFPS, ERS 2
EAONO, EASM, EFAS, EGDG, ELS 2
EGFL, ESBS, ESGS, UEP 1

During the EUFOS meeting, last June in Vienna, also the Board of the European Academy of ORL-HNS and representatives of most European ORL sub-specialty societies convened for their first General Assembly; a report of this meeting is attached.

After ample consideration and in agreement with the ESPO Council ESPO has decided to join the EAORL-HNS.
ESPO is invited to contribute to the programme of the 2009 congress in Mannheim and board members will discuss with excellent teachers in our midst the topics in pediatric Otorhinolaryngology which should be presented at this conference.

It is important to note that at the ESPO Conference in Budapest, next June, a special Round Table will be held about the issues of teaching and training in the different European countries, and the challenge of standardization. Among the panelists are a representative of the UEMS (Mr. Alec Blayney) and prominent ESPO members from various countries in Europe. We certainly hope that many of you will attend this session and participate in the discussion about the future of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology.

At the end of 2007, Jetty and I would like to send you season’s greetings and wish you a good and successful 2008, the year in which we hope to meet many if not all of you in Budapest.

With kindest regards, December 2007
