News : ESPO Newsletter : Autumn 2009

The 8th (and last) ESPO Conference in Budapest, June 2008 - from now on all ESPO meetings will be named ESPO International Congress - was a great success with more than 700 participants from more than 60 countries.

For the Budapest Conference the pleasant location of the Intercontinental hotel on the border of the Danube was chosen with an extension to the next-door Marriott hotel. It was a short but very enjoyable walk along the river from one site to the other simultaneously giving the delegates a beautiful view and the necessary portion of fresh air.

The scientific program covered the whole field of pediatric ORL with a special focus on major problems and new developments. Even Instructional courses starting at 7.30 in the morning were well attended. Special topics varied from knowledge-based medicine, through Genetics and Fetal surgery to Baha programs in specific groups, and pediatric nasal/airway problems and anything in between.

Special attention was paid to the education and training in pediatric ORL in the various European countries; a round table which demonstrated the great differences within Europe, still so far from a potential standard program.

Very stimulating during the conference was the first meeting of the Board with the members of the Scientific Committee, who presented many good ideas for improvement of our two-yearly meetings. A short report memo is attached to this Newsletter.

ESPO highly appreciated the excellent organization of the conference chaired by Gabor Katona, also president of the Hungarian association of Paediatric ORL (section of the Hungarian Society of ORL), and Zsolt Farkas. They worked very hard for this happening, together with the Honorary president Jeno Hirschberg and the president of the Conference Istvan Sziklai, and the Motesz Congress and Travel Agency under the outstanding management of Alice Sipos.

If you are now convinced that you missed a very unique event, please note in your diary now the dates of the next and 10th ESPO International Congress in 2010 which will be held in Pamplona, Spain from 5 to 9 June 2010; see the website (www.espopamplona2010.com).

Pamplona is a beautiful and very interesting historic city in the North of Spain, well known for the bull fights in May each year, but for the rest of the year a peaceful and very pleasant spot in nice surroundings. The city can easily be reached by plane, train or car from Madrid, Bilbao or Biarritz (France).

NB. Please, note that only ESPO members who have paid their dues are entitled to a reduced registration fee at the next congress. For payment see the ESPO website www.espo.eu.com

In 2009 ESPO will be represented by some members at the 1st International Meeting of the European Academy of OtoRhinoLaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, to be held in Mannheim, Germany, from 27-30 June 2009 (www.eaorl-hns.com). This meeting is in particular meant for trainees, residents and young ORL specialists. Ample time will be allotted to discussion sessions.

The registration fee will be lower than what is normal for congresses and the accommodation is concentrated in student quarters.
So, the ESPO would very much appreciate if you would distribute this information, inclusive of the website address of the Academy, to your residents or to young colleagues in your environment.

We are looking forward to the last month of 2008, so this is the place to send you all season’s greetings and wishing you an excellent start of 2009 in which Jetty and I hope to meet many of you again.

Kindest regards,

Carel Verwoerd 29 November 2008
Secretary-general ESPO
